I Signed It With Money That Was Not Mine

It is the third time this week you have been awake at this hour.

The shape is always the same. You are fine until about two, and then some part of your mind opens a folder that you did not ask it to open, and there are four figures in it, and they do not move around no matter how many times you look.

The obligation is real. It is signed. It carries your name and it carries money that was never yours.

And the numbers coming in are not the numbers you were shown.

That is not a complaint about anybody. Numbers are projections, and projections are made in an office by people using averages, and averages are not a street.

But you built a life on them, and now the difference between the two sits on your chest at two in the morning.

Here is what I am not going to do in this piece, and I want to say it before anything else so you know what you are reading.

I am not going to tell you what to do about the agreement. I do not know your paperwork and nobody writing an article does. I am not going to make any promise about the numbers, because I do not know them either, and a man in your position has heard enough from people who did not know.

What I am going to do is separate two things that have been welded together on your chest, because one of them is a real weight and the other one is a weight you have been carrying that was never yours to hold.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD

David writes this while people he trusted are actively working against him, and he says something practical.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22, King James Version)

Cast. It is a throwing word. It is what a man does with a net, with force, away from himself.

And notice what is promised and what is not. He shall sustain thee. Not: He shall remove it. Not: He shall change the four figures.

Sustain. Hold up. Carry the one who is carrying.

You have somewhere to throw the weight tonight, and Psalm 55:22 promises the sustaining of the man rather than the removal of the burden. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the sustaining, and He has been doing it every night at two whether or not it was noticed.

That distinction is not a technicality. It is the difference between a promise you can trust and one that would break in your hands.

If the verse said God would change the numbers, you would test it against next month and it would fail or it would not, and your faith would be riding on a figure.

It does not say that. It says the man gets held. And that is something you can check tonight rather than in a quarter.

You are the thing being held rather than the numbers being fixed, and it is written that He shall sustain thee. The Spirit of God is the one doing that holding, and Psalm 55 puts the promise on the person rather than on the circumstance.

Now the two weights, because they are different and only one of them is yours.

The first is the obligation. That is real, it is heavy, and it will be there in the morning. Nobody can pray it off you and no article can dissolve it.

The second is the signature. Not the paperwork. The moment. The afternoon, the pen, the man you were when you did it, and the ten thousand times you have gone back into that room since.

You are carrying a moment as though it were a debt, and the written word says cast thy burden rather than cast thy burden except that one. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an afternoon off a man, and Psalm 55:22 does not exclude a single thing from what may be thrown.

The signature is not the debt

Let me be exact about the second weight, because it is the one doing the damage at two in the morning.

The obligation costs a specific amount on a specific day. It is arithmetic. Arithmetic is heavy and it is finite.

The signature costs something different. It runs a scene. It asks a question that has no answer, which is what kind of man does that, and it asks it in the dark where there is nobody to answer it.

That second one has no number attached and no end date, and it is what actually has you awake.

You have been paying twice for one decision, and it is written that the burden is to be cast rather than examined. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a debt from a self-accusation, and He is not the one who has been running that scene at two in the morning.

And one thing more, plainly, because this is the part of the site where it matters most.

If the nights have got to the place where thoughts about not being here have started arriving, that is not something to carry by yourself and it is not a sign of anything except how heavy this is. Call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight. And tell one actual human being: a doctor, a pastor you trust, somebody who can sit with you.

You are not required to be the only person who knows how bad it has got, and the written word says cast it rather than hold it. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes with a man into a conversation like that, and Psalm 55:22 is why he does not have to arrive there alone.

Tell one person, and book the time

So here are two things, and they are both this week.

Tell one person the truth about the numbers. One. Your wife, if she does not fully know. A friend who will not try to solve it. Somebody who can hear a sentence without needing to fix it.

Say the real figure. Not the softened version. The one from the folder that opens at two.

You are ending a solitary thing rather than asking anybody for help, and Psalm 55:22 says He shall sustain thee, which is the opposite of a man holding it alone. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a true sentence is finally said out loud to another person.

And then book time with somebody qualified to look at the numbers properly. An accountant. A financial counselor. Somebody whose actual job it is.

Not for reassurance. For accuracy. A man who has been looking at four figures in the dark for six months does not have an accurate picture, and an accurate picture is worth more than another night of arithmetic.

You have been trying to do in the dark what somebody could do in an afternoon, and the written word never once asked anybody to carry what a competent person could help him hold. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a man to the right door, and Psalm 55 is where the casting is commanded rather than suggested.

Then you go in and open in the morning, because that is what is in front of you, and the day is still yours to do well.
